Furthermore, if you have an existing range hood that doesn’t seem to be working properly, we highly recommend having an appliance technician tend to it.

But before we head on to patch up your range hood, we’ll outline some pointers that will guide you in choosing whether or not to repair your appliance.

Head on to read the most common range hood problems.

    Range Hood Types

Before we go on straight with the common repairs, it’s essential to know what type of range hood you have at home to help you identify what might be causing it to malfunction.

Here are the most common types of range hoods:

    1. Ducted – It exhaust air outside of your home
    2. Recirculated or Non-Ducted – It recirculates air after the filtering process
    3. Wall-Mounted Chimney – It is installed against the wall. It looks similar to a home chimney.
    4. Under-Cabinet – It is a non-ducted type and has replaceable filters
    5. Ceiling-Mounted Chimney – it is suspended above cooking islands.
    6. Custom Built-In – It has ventilation plastered against the wall

    Most Common Problems

Now that you’ve identified which type of range hoods you have, it’s time to know how to address the problems you have with your range hood.

Range Hood is not filtering smoke

An old air filter might be to blame, especially if your range hood is a non-ducted system type.

It’s because the grease blockage is restricting the air passage and airflow.

The fan motor may also accumulate thick grease particles, which can be difficult to remove.

    Possible Solution:

Clean the inner surface of the fan motor. Or replace your existing filter with a new one.

If the fan motor is damaged because of grease and germs’ build-up, then you need immediate repair.

    Air is not venting outside

A broken fan blade can cause poor venting, including a malfunctioning blower motor or kitchen exhaust fan motor.

Also, something might have stuck in the blower motor, which you cannot address without disassembling the range hood setup.

    The motor hums

A humming sound from the motor indicates that there’s something wrong with your range hood.

Defective fan motors are the most probable cause.

Otherwise, something might have caught against the housing of the blower wheel or fan blade.

    Possible Solution:

    1. Blower Motor. If the blower motor is producing a humming sound, it means that the shaft bearings threading are worn out. If your range hood has a large motor, it usually has an oil spout. Add oil to the motor bearing to allow the fan to spin again.
    2. Blower Wheel. Something might have gotten stuck in the blower wheel, or the blower wheel is creating friction against the blower housing. If this is the case, spin the blower fan manually. If the fan blades won’t budge, check the blower wheel again. If it is clear from obstructions but still won’t work, then it’s time to replace it.
    3. Fan Blade. Make sure that it is turning. Check if it is rubbing against the blower housing. If it is damaged because of it, then replace it.

The fan and hood lights do not work

The range hood automatically lights up when it is switched on.

But when it stops working, something is wrong with the light and switches.

    Possible Solution:

Check if the light bulbs are malfunctioning or need replacement.

If they work fine, inspect the switch to see if some components are at fault.

If the switch is the problem, it’s time to replace the range hood light switch.

Use a multimeter to check it if it’s faulty before you replace it.

The control board might be the underlying issue of why your lights are not working, so test the board if applicable.

If the process is too daunting or you don’t have adequate equipment to troubleshoot your range hood, seek help from a professional technician.

Now that you have identified the common range hood repairs, it’s time for you to call for an Appliance Repairman to get your range hood fixed.
